Description

BURKE, Edmund. A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful. London: Printed for R. and J. Dodsley, 1759. Second edition, with the “Introduction on Taste.” 8vo.

The definitive edition of one of the most important aesthetic documents eighteenth-century England produced. Burke first published the Enquiry anonymously in 1757; for this second edition he revised the text throughout and included “Introduction on Taste,”

An appealing copy – entirely original in unusual 18th century English Vellum gilt.  The binding is very sturdy without any cracking along the joints and with an appropriate ivory patina. Morocco label.  The text block in fine condition, the laid paper with just a few spots here and there.
