Description

A PICTURE OF MADRID: taken on the spot. By Christian Augustus Fischer. Tr. from the German

London, Printed for J. Mawman, 1808

The first English edition of Christian Augustus Fischer study of Madrid in the year of the Spanish Peninsular War's Third of May Uprising.

The definition of very fine unsophisticated copy:  Publisher's paper boards, printed paper label, edges untrimmed with ample margins; a few page folds 'unopened'.  Remarkably well preserved both inside and out with no restorations.  The only blemish is a paper tear (no loss of text) on page 299 and a little browning and crumpling of pages 4 to 11.  It would be hard to find a better copy of this book which is generally found in poor condition with the paper invariably heavily browned throughout.

Bound in at the end of the book is a 34 page catalogue of publications printed for Longman, Rees, and One, Paternoster Row, dated May 1, 1808.

Listed are such topics as: Churches and convents, The Prado, Spanish cookery, The Salting Houses, Botanical Gardens, Hackney-coaches and Chairs, Education, Royal Cabinet of Natural History, Public Libraries, King's Library, Booksellers, Cigarroes, Sweetmeats, or Ducles, Coffee Houses, Retail shops, Bull-fights, The Carnival, Fasts, Swindlers, Lemonade Cellars, Theatres, Feria, The Sex, Intercourse between both Sexes.
